ok...I know I might be going a little overboard with this spoken word thing, but i was just listening to this podcast called RadioLab, and it totally inspired me ! It kind of addressed everything I was thinking about in the last entry. The particular podcast I listened to was about "Musical Language." Check the links if you can.

talking and stuff
I realized recently that I love love love the art of the spoken word. No where is this more evident than in my chosen profession as a speech therapist...but even then, I think being an ST is more about overall communicative abilities than the actual expression that takes place with spoken word.
"Hi, my name is Christina and I love NPR." In truth, I think I am a total addict when it comes to NPR. Carl Castle, Bob Boilen, Ira Glass.....you are my heroes. You are among many heroes I have in your community. I am at the point where I don't even have to look at the television to understand what is moving the storyline along. I simply listen as I am cutting fabric or cleaning the house.
For that matter, I love theater and I love open mics. I love story telling in any form whether I am sitting at the dining table with my uncles as they reminesce their childhood or whether I am sitting at the bar with a friend as we recount the week's events.
Is this a sign of aging ? I notice lately that I am content to come home earlier in the evening on a weekend night than I used too. It kind of bothers me but I'm not sure why. Is it weird that I don't necessarily mind the ever present changes that are occuring in my daily lifestyle....the fact that I am actually blogging about NPR? Is there really any thing wrong with that ?

a couple of things
My ipod music list is banging right now. From podcasts to new music, I am set for the next couple of months...too bad I always want more when it comes to music. Today, my obsession with Radiohead continues on and I tried a couple of new albums: Hvarf/Heim by Sigur Ros and Grow up and Blow Away by Metric.
At dinner tonight, I started to think about how I am a glass half empty kind of gal (at least right now)...but then a more important quandry presented itself. What exactly am I drinking ?
Lastly, I am working on better ways to create links for the few who actually read this blog. Bear with me as I figure these things out !

in rainbows
Today started out with a bang. I woke up around 10 am...or so I thought...I didn't realize until about an hour later that daylight savings happened last night and I actually woke up at 9 am. Even so, I was in pretty good spirits. It's nice to have a quiet Saturday sometimes and to get up early on a Sunday morning. This Sunday I was up so early because I wanted to cheer my friend Ribka on as she ran in the ING New York marathon. I was so amazed at the strength and endurance it took for these people to run 26 miles ! (Disclaimer: I'm not sure how many miles are in a marathon so I took a guess !) I have the upmost respect for everyone who ran today ! I could never do it !
On my way uptown, I found myself gravitating once again to the new Radiohead album, "In Rainbows." It's been the most listened to album on my ipod for the past couple of days. Although I knew I liked it from my first listen, my appreciation for it has only increased since then. Each songs flows from one to the other. Thom Yorke's voice is both soothing and rhythmic. In facat, the whole album could be described that way. The strings just bring things full circle, and there are several lines that just take my breath away every time I hear them. One of my favorite songs on the album begins like this :
"I don't wanna be your friend
I just wanna be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts"
Radiohead has done something pretty cool to market this particular album. You can go to their website and buy the album for however much it is worth to you. It can be anything you want ! I personally thought it was worth $21 but that was due to the fact that I had no idea how to convert pounds to dollars. I was never very good at math. My recommendation is to just get it.

two weeks
Two weeks can be chaotic, full and definitely a whirlwind. I know this because that is what MY last couple of weeks have felt like. I admit that there is not much I would want to change...but man, I am so tired ! It has taken a while to get myself back on track...But to fully understand where I am coming from, I would have to go back to what it is exactly that I have been up to....
Things got started on October 23rd when I went to the Stars show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. So many people have blogged about this show that I don't want to go into full detail, but I do want to make a few comments. I didn't know what to expect from their live show at all. I hadn't heard or read anything, but I was lucky enough to be able to attend the show with a several new friends who were avid fans of the band. Stars is a band that I didn't really "hear" until I saw them live. I didn't realized what an intensely eighties sound they have. I also didn't know that they would have so much flair in their performance. The two lead singers really engaged with each other and their bandmates. If you are looking for new music, I would definitely check them out.
The next night I managed to score tickets to the first in a series of 2 New Pornographers shows at Webster Hall. I saw them on the Fourth of July and was hooked with their music and especially with Neko Case. This show was especially nice though because the whole band was performing. I got to see Dan Behar !
The rest of the week consisted of birthday party happy hours, and pre-halloween parties. Speaking of, I have the best Halloween story ever...well, maybe not the best, but certainly unique. I dressed up as Amy Winehouse...it was awesome ! A friend styled my hair in a real bee hive...see the pictures below, it was truly unreal. Anyway, I took a cab home and as we entered the Brooklyn Bridge, traffic came to a full stop. We crept along a couple of inches and I waited approximately ten minutes before I got out of the cab and jumped the fence to walk OVER THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE at 2 am in the morning with crazy Amy Winehouse bee hive hair !
Sometimes I wonder if this kind of stuff would happen to me if I lived some where else...I just wonder.
