I don't mean for my title to sound so morose. It actually refers to the letter that I received from 17-year old self this past Friday. Talk about amazing....my junior year religion teacher (yes, i went to catholic school) made us complete this cliche of an exercise when we were on the cusp of becoming "adults," but I can assure you that none of us actually thought she would send the letter. Mrs. Myer was only at our school for a year but she was a wonderful person...and talk about an anomaly, the only African American teacher in a predominantly white catholic high school in a southern town...She didn't seem to be bothered, and all these years later, I had only thought about her maybe once - at the 10 year reunion. What a great blast from the past though. I will be forever grateful and appreciative of the time she spent in my life.
So about the letter...what can I say? I laughed. I cried. I was hopeful and thrilled...and even a little inspired. As I read it, I wanted to hear more from myself. I feel like I wasn't really "in" to the exercise. Like I was bothered or something. I only gave myself a glimpse of the person I was then....how frustrating ! But I guess that's not that an uncommon thing for me to do :) So, I don't want to write the whole thing, but here are a few highlights:
ON SCHOOL:
"I really like school that much. The people are annoying and I haven't had a good English or Chemistry teacher all year."
ON EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
"I don't drink, do drugs, or smoke. I never have tried any of that either." (Whoa !!!)
ON COLLEGE:
"I don't know where I want to go to college but I do know that I want to double major in college: speech therapy and music. I guess you could say I am an overachiever."
ON HOME AND THE FUTURE:
"When I think about it, I really do love Monroe and my life here. However, I feel that I have to move on and leave in order to grow."
On that note, I don't think that much else needs to be said....I'm a little teary to be honest...How bittersweet !
